Sabra is honored to be part of devising a brand new play!

The Independent Shakespeare Company is developing “WHITE PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW HOW TO BEHAVE AT ENTERTAINMENTS DESIGNED FOR LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF COLOUR”

This sign greeted audience members at The African Grove Theater Company. Established by William Henry Brown as a place for theater by and for Black people in 19th century New York. It was a home for many artists, including the legendary classical actor Ira Aldridge. The first performance at the African Grove took place exactly 200 years ago in 1821.

This play-in-development is an exploration of the parallel between the struggles and successes of Black theater artists today and the Black theater artists of 1821.

ISC is committed to creating an environment where theater makers can be their strongest creative selves. This project embodies our values of exploration and collaboration, while placing the voices of our Black ensemble members squarely in the foreground.
